What is Global Warming?

Fight Global WarmingIn this article we will discuss about the Global Warming.

In simple words one can say that "Global Warming is the gradual increase in the global average temperature on our planet due to Greenhouse gases".

How is it Caused?
Excessive emission of Greenhouse gases are the main cause for Global warming. My previous article explains about Greenhouse Effect.

  • Increase in the concentration of the Greenhouse gases i.e, Co2, Water vapor, Methane , Nitrous oxide in the atmosphere helps in trapping more infrared rays produced from the sun which otherwise would have reflected back into the space.
  • The major sources for production of these gases are the Power plants, Chemical Industries, Burning fossil fuels(like Petrol, Coal) and Deforestation.
  • Methane is the powerful gas in trapping more heat, it is produced from the soil decay in the rice fields.
  • Trees and plants help in reducing the Co2 concentration by producing Oxygen from it, but due to Deforestation the C02 concentration is increasing rapidly hence trapping more heat.
  • If more heat gets trapped then more warmer the earth becomes hence resulting in the Global Warming.
I am getting COOKED

What are its Effects?
Such rise in temperature effects the ecosystem badly. Resulting in floods in dry areas, Drought condition in rainy areas etc etc.The negative effects of global warming are numerous. Some of them are explained below.

  • Primary effect is Climate Change, as discussed there may occur reverse conditions in some areas, Heavy rainfall, Cyclones, Tsunamis, Thunderstorms, Tornado's, Twisters, etc.
  • Glaciers are melting at a rapid rate which increases the sea level hence engulfing the coastal area.
  • Due to change in climatic conditions, many species become extinct and many others populate more both of which are irreversible reactions in the environment. Mosquitoes are one such species which likes warm climate and hence breed and spread more diseases whereas species which are already extinct are golden toad, Costa rica's harlequin frog.
  • Due to floods, cyclones the crops are damaged.
  • Aquatic animals are also getting affected due to change in water temperature.
  • Shifting in climates affects farmers, birds, animals in fact everybody.
All these Global warming effects have been concluded with the research conducted in some US Universities and these effects directly affect on the habitat. Still many of the effects are in discovery stage.

Many of the human beings think that Global Warming is a natural process, but our industrial revolution has altered this natural process and the proofs are seen in some places as explained in this section.
So follow the Green Living Tips and Fight Global Warming for a happy environment.

What is GreenHouse Effect?

Greenhouse Effect is always portrayed as a villain during the environmental discussions. But its only because of the Greenhouse effect that most of the lives on the Earth survive. Otherwise the temperature on the earth would be remained constant around 10 to 15 degree Celsius.
Before explaining the greenhouse effect in detail, let me familiarize you about it with an example.
We have experienced that our car is hotter inside than the outside temperature. This is because the sun rays come inside through the windows, get absorbed by the car seats, mats etc and hence the much of the rays
cant escape from the car therefore creating the heat within the car.

Greenhouse effect is a kind of energy balance process that takes place on the Earth. The infrared rays of the sun are trapped in the earth's atmosphere and a habitable temperature is maintained on the earth surface. This effect is responsible to keep our world warmer and much lively. Without this phenomena our planet would be like Mars(lifeless). Any imbalance in this process will create many problems, like Global Warming.

Out of 100% of the sun rays which hits our earth atmosphere and the surface, around 70% is absorbed by the land, water, plants etc on the planet and around 30% is absorbed and reflected back by atmosphere.
Some percent in the 70% is also reflected back else our planet would be like Venus(very hot). The absorption is directly proportional to the release, it means that the more rays the earth absorbs the more it releases. Earth cools itself by releasing the rays back to the space. But out of these released radiations still many rays which comes in contact with C02, Methane, water vapors are again reflected back to our surface. Hence if more rays stay on earth warmer the earth becomes. Therefore, increase in the density of the gases mentioned above can turn the goodness of greenhouse effect into the badness. And the density of these gases is rapidly increasing by the industrial revolution, pollution, population deforestation. And eventually the increase in all of these raises the temperature unexpectedly in the ecosystem.

How to Control Greenhouse Effect:
Controlling Greenhouse from becoming wild is to simply control the CO2, Methane. The Co2 produced by us is in abundant but our converters i.e, the trees and plants who convert CO2 to Oxygen(our lifeline) are not in abundant.

  • One can follow the Green Living Tips as discussed in my previous post.
  • Drive less and Drive smart.
  • Grow more and more tree, plants.
  • Use less electricity.
  • Replace the light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. CFL's life is long and is less energy hungry, consumes less power.

Let our earth retain its normal greenhouse process soon. So to do this we need to adapt these basic solutions described above.
